Espinheiro santa is a small evergreen shrub, native to many parts of South America and Brazil: South Asia. The genus Maytenus more than 200 species, many of which are also found in the Amazon region where they are used as medicinal plants by indigenous tribes.

In Espinheiro santa is a group of chemical elements (located in leaves, in bark and roots of) called maytansinoidi, belonging to a class of substances that have been studied since the early'70s for their anticancer action and anticancer and which today are the components of chemotherapeutic drugs. Other elements present in phyto Espinheiro holy showed the same anticancer properties, and anticancer antileucemiche.

Espinheiro saint was the subject of numerous clinical trials for its efficacy in the treatment of ulcers but also of cancer. Furthermore, researchers have focused on the traditional study of this plant as an aid to abortion and contraception, but they may not validate.

Although this plant is still used in folk medicine for various types of cancer, its use more widely known and is in the treatment of ulcers and digestive problems. Its antiulcer action was demonstrated in 1991 when a study on a hot liquid extract of leaves of holy Espinheiro proved effective as two of the main antiulcer drugs, the ranitidine and cimetidine. This study also showed that Espinheiro santa could cause an increase in volume and pH of gastric juice.

In fact, this species of Maytenus not been used by indigenous people as well as other species of Maytenus. It's been documented increased usage by some natives of Paraguay, where holy Espinheiro was used as a contraceptive and fertility regulator, and to induce menstruation and abortions. Espinheiro santa has a long and documented history of use in urban and herbal medicine in South America.

Traditional preparation:
One cup of decoction of leaves to be taken 2-3 times a day (or together with meals to help digestion), or 2-3g of powdered leaves in tablets or capsules or mixed in a fruit juice or water 1 -- 2 times a day. The decoction can also be applied directly on the skin for wounds, vent, or skin cancer.

Contraindications:
Liquid extracts of holy Espinheiro may have estrogenic effects and reduced fertility in women. Women who are following anti-infertility, trying to become pregnant, or suffering from estrogen-positive tumors should not make use of this plant

Interaction with drugs: May increase the action of barbiturates.
